Looking back

I realize its been 5 months since I posted anything, so I have made a resolution to do better. Mostly for the purpose of journaling, but if there is anyone still out there who reads this, welcome back to you as well.

This first comeback post will be from August 2013. Grandma Taylor and Ryan's sister, Mindy, came for a little visit. We had planned on going to Nauvoo again this summer so we invited them to come along, since they had never been before. It just so happened that we got to go on the last day of the Nauvoo Pageant, so that was fun to see.

Our first stop was at Carthage Jail.

After a day of travel, we didnt have a whole lot of time for exploring Nauvoo, but we did get to see the Blacksmith shop before they closed. We got there right as another tour started so we had to wait about 20 minutes. The kids enjoyed playing in the covered wagon and checking out the well that was outside, while we waited.

Madi wearing the prairie ring the blacksmith made out of a horseshoe nail.
The next morning, we had more time to explore. We went on a carriage ride tour.
The kids wanted to say thanks to the horses who pulled our carriage. Their names were Tim and Tom which we thought was funny, since we have a Tim and Tom's cheese store down the street from us.

We also got to see how the kids went to school in Nauvoo times. Brylee enjoyed ringing the bell to let us know it was time for school, and the mini chalkboards.

Before the pageant started, the kids got to participate in some "pioneer past times". They learned that stilts are harder to use than they look.

 Tug of war...classic.
Some kind of race using a string and a wooden toy.
 Checkers.
Getting pulled in a handcart by Dad.

 The stick pull.

Madi thought she could take Dad one handed...
then she tried some easier competition.
As soon as the sun went down, it was time for the pageant to start. We were fortunate that some friends from our ward were there the night before, so they saved us some seats up front. Still, my phone doesnt take good pictures of moving objects like dancing folk.
It was cool how they actually gradually built the temple in the background.

The next morning, we checked out the actual temple, and did some more Nauvoo touring.

Madi got to work at the printing press...
  and help make rope.
Brylee found some toys more her speed in the family center.
It came time too soon to head back home.

Since we still had Grandma and Mindy for a couple days, we entertained them in other ways. The kids demonstrated their bike skills.
And whats a visit to Wisconsin without a Jelly Belly Factory tour?
And a look at Lake Michigan.
And a guy soaring around on water propelled jet shoes, in Lake Michigan.
And a ride on the trolley.
And exploring downtown.

But before we could let Aunt Mindy leave, we had to let her put her new hair cutting skills to good use. She had just finished beauty school and we missed out on all the fun of letting her practice on us.

Pictures of the new cuts coming up next!
We are glad Grandma and Mindy could come to visit and have fun with us!

I'm reading! Keep up the blogging. I go in spurts sometimes too. Life just gets busy. You're invited to my blog, right?
It was a fun surprise to see Ryan a few weeks ago. And good to hear how you are all doing. We miss ya!

Yep - That was a fun trip - enjoyed the way you blogged it. Trip was letting me know I needed to get the knee surgery too! Glad Ryan brought the brick from Nauvoo to me and that blue cane on his business trip here in Salt Lake few weeks ago. We like the mementos we collected.
