Reminiscing

Lately Ive been wishing I could return to my childhood and go to one of the happy places in my memory. It might be one of those experiences that at the time I didnt fully appreciate, or maybe I did. But now that Im grown it seems so much more sweet. Its that of the time I spent in Hurricane Utah at my Grandparents house. I dont think I ever anticipated the 5 hour drive there and back, but during those trips is when I could always get my best writing done. In the long, hot car ride with just me and my imagination in the back seat. Sometimes the thoughts would turn into chapters.
Once we arrived, I would get to go down to the basement room, where I could enjoy more of my own space. It was dark, and damp and smelled the way an old dark and damp storage room filled with canned goods should smell; and Im pretty sure it was full of spiders, but it didnt matter. It was the only bedroom in the basement...I think. There was also a little family room down there, with a couch, a bookshelf full of old books, and chinese checkers. Sometimes I would take the checkers upstairs and play with Dad. When he would win, I would go back downstairs to the basement that smelled funny and play alone.
Grandma and Grandpa lived up on a hill above the Virgin River, and below Zion National Park. They had a big tractor, a huge orchard of fruit trees and at one point or another, a flock of sheep. I dont think the tractor ran most of the time, but the kids all loved to climb up and sit on it. When we arrived, we always came through the back door. No one used the front, unless you were'nt related and unless you were a salesmen or the teachers bringing the sacrament to my grandparents, you were probably related. Upon entering you would see a huge white freezer filled with preserves and always 2 or more gallons of assorted ice-cream. They loved ice-cream, and that meant we always got some. Must be in the genes. After going through another door, you would enter the kitchen and then the dining room. I ate lots of good food in that dining room. Grandma was a great cook. The things I remember eating most was the creamed wheat and toast for breakfast, and the homemade tomato soup with grilled cheese sandwiches. I crave those tastes. I dont know how she did it, but it always tasted better at Grandmas house. I cant re-create it.
Just outside the dinning room was the back porch. There was a bug zapper hanging and a few cats. I dont know if they actually belonged to them, but Grandpa fed them like they did. I also remember there being some tomato plants where I could always find a few tomato worms. Bugs didnt gross me out as much then...wonder why? Maybe those tomato plants were what made the soup taste so good. They also had the tastiest fruit from their trees. Apricots. I remember apricots.
The next room you would enter was the family room. There was a huge fireplace surrounded in the red rock you would see at Zions canyon. I loved to sit on the ledge of that fireplace. In the evenings, the little folding card table would come out, and we would sit and play Grandma and Grandpas favorite card game-Rook. Most of the time it was just them, my parents and I. Sometimes an aunt and uncle would be there too, but I was usually the only kid. My siblings were all 9 or more years older than me, and my Dad was the youngest in his family, so most of my cousins were grown too. I didnt mind though. I loved playing rook while eating a bowl of ice-cream. That tasted better there too.

Grandma and Grandpa on their 60th Anniversary, in front of the big red rock fireplace.

There was also a curio cabinet in that room. It held grandmas dolls, mostly of which she hand made. I loved to look at them. She gave me a couple. There was also a pair of stuffed animal sheep next to the couch, with bells around their neck. She gave me one of those too. Then there was the piano. Grandma taught Dad how to play, and I imagined them both sitting at that piano while I pictured my dad once like me...complaining about having to learn it and just wanting to go play. Grandma would love to listen to Dad play when he came. It must have been rewarding for her. He was as good as a concert pianist now.
When my second cousins, who were more my age would come; we would spend a lot of time outdoors. We would walk down the dirt path that led to the sheep, walk through the pasture, and stand at the top of the huge cliff overlooking the river. It was always important how high the water was that season, but we didnt really understand why. We would throw rocks over the cliff to see if we could hit the water. I faintly remember a honey bee cabinet/box? Maybe I'm wrong. Our favorite though, was walking down the path that led to the river. I cant remember what game we would play, but I know it was fascinating. I think we actually got in the river at times for a quick refresher from the hot sun. I remember one instance when the irrigation would come through and flood the yard, my second cousins and I got in our swimsuits and ran through the water. Then there were the times we would walk down to the gas station on the corner, and buy a treat.

Me and my 2nd cousin running through the irrigation.

The only time I remember the TV being on was during conference. Im sure we must have watched it more, but it doesnt stand out. We would all gather in the small room where the TV was kept and listen to the prophet. Sometimes one of my aunts would bring me something to do or teach me a craft to keep me busy. My dad had 7 siblings. One of them was usually there with us. I remember going to Ben Franklins craft store and buying materials with Aunt Roma. She was my favorite. She was an author too.
On a few occasions we would spend Easter there. We would go to the sand dunes and roll eggs down the hill, or have an egg hunt around Grandma and Grandpas house. I remember once waking up to discover the Easter bunny filling our baskets. He ran outside and I followed. I ran all the way around the house looking for him, but he was gone. It was likely someone dressed in a bunny costume, or more likely just my imagination, but at the time, I knew it was for real.

I wish my kids could go back and experience these things with me. I fear they would be too caught up in a video game, movie or a toy to enjoy the simple things around them. I feel old when I say this, but the kids today are so wrapped up in technology that the idea of leaving things to the imagination is dying. Sometimes I want to throw the TV out the window. Maybe just cancelling cable would be a better alternative...but no, there would still be DVD's. Honestly, my sanity might go with it after I have to find other ways to entertain my children, since they dont know how to do it themselves. And I do enjoy our DVR, when after the kids go to sleep I can watch all my shows after a day of Bubble Guppies, Dora and Umi-Zoomy. Maybe we could just go for a TV free week, and see how it goes. But Im getting off track here. The point is, I hope my kids will have something like this to remember when they are older. I havent a clue what it would be, but maybe just a nostalgic smell like a damp dark basement full of preserves, or homeade tomato soup will take them back, like it does me. Or the warmth of the Southern Utah sun on their faces. And then they'll remember the good ol days.

(Sometimes I hate blogger. No matter how hard I try to format things how I want, it just does it its way. Sorry for the inconsistent font.)

Dog vs Cat

This is for those of you who have asked how the dog and cat get along. I have to say the cat has come a long way in his tolerance towards the dog. Although, he still wants nothing to do with her. I hate talking in videos so feel free to ignore the commentary and enjoy the Dora music in the background. Also, the cat is de-clawed, so no animals were harmed in the making of this video. (:

As a side note, the dog has progressed well in her poopy training. She has learned to ring a bell on the back door when she needs to go out. That is, unless I give her access the the front room in which case she still feels the need to mark her territory in every corner. Not sure why that room in particular is appealing to her, but for now it will remained blocked off! She also has learned to roll over (as seen in the video) and to sit, and go to her crate and her bed when told (most of the time). The come command only works with treats...go figure...or if she feels she is not in immediate trouble. I think I have made it past the point of wanting to drop her in the middle of Lake Michigan and never look back, but some days are better than others. The ring worm scare has turned out to be just that...a scare (nightmare), and hasnt shown up positive. That has helped my stress level go down significantly. So feel free to come by and bring your kids to run wild with her to get her energy out, because as you can see, she enjoys running...as fast as possible...in circles around the furniture or anywhere else there is room to run at top speed.

The new Poopy...oh, I mean Puppy

A few of our kids, one in particular...has been begging for a dog since they could speak. Ryan, the not so enthusiastic pet owner, has always stood firm in his decision to not add another furry creature to the Taylor household. The cat is more than enough to send him into a frustrated rage. Luckily for the kids, he loves them more than the idea of not owning a slobbery, barking, pooping pooch. He put them to the test to prove their responsibility during the upcoming weeks of Christmas. They must get along, listen, pick things up, and help with hairball clean-up. It worked...for about a week. Then it got down to one. The same mentioned in the first sentence. she tried so hard, and with "friendly" reminders to her siblings to do the same if they ever wanted to have a dog to call their own. Weeks passed, and he still showed no signs of breaking down. They thought all hope was gone. Little did they know, we had been researching and looking at dogs for a couple months. I had mentioned a dog would be a good Christmas gift, and he would hardly have to buy them anything else, they would be so excited. So as you saw from the previous post, he finally conceded, and decided to get them the dog they had always wanted as a Christmas surprise.
So because we wanted to be responsible parents and pet owners we decided to let the kids in on our decision of what dog to get. We ended up waiting a whole 3 days. Crazy I know. Once they knew the dog was a go, they couldnt wait. Our research brought us to the decision to get a puggle (pug/beagle mix). Ryan and I had actually been looking for a couple months at local adoption listings, and puggles are hard to come by. Seems they are quite popular. So we came across 2. One was a 4 year old male. Ryan and I snuck out to see that one first, before taking the kids along. The shelter he was at was crazy. It stunk, there were so many dogs. As soon as we walked back, my heart broke. They all got so excited and looked at you like "get me outta here and take me home!" I wished I could adopt them all, but I am realistic. We looked at a couple they had and then they brought the puggle out. I loved him. He was beautiful. The problem with a 4 year old, was that we didnt know what his temperament would be like with kids and with the cat, and that he was already full grown and Zack is deathly afraid of dogs. We had to say goodbye to him for now.
The second one we found was a 4 month old female. The only problem there was that she was 2 hours away, and with puppies, you have to start training from scratch...something I didnt look forward to. But, the kids really wanted a puppy and we figured Zack would do better if we started small. So I filled out an adoption application. You would think we were adopting a kid, from the type of questions there were, and I was so nervous I didnt answer them sufficiently. Luckily, or not, it came back approved and with an invitation to take her home the next day. So we set up an appointment to go and meet her. I didnt want to totally throw out the idea of the other one, so we stopped by to meet him on the way out, although I knew...once the kids saw the puppy, it would be all over. We prepped Zack and told him it would be a super hero dog that would protect him from other dogs. He promised to be brave. It pretty much went how I thought. Zack freaked, and refused to step down from Ryans arms. The girls thought he was cute and open to the idea of possibly bringing him home, but I knew.
Then it was off to see the puppy. Of course she was cute...shes a puppy. And just as I thought, the kids wanted her. Zack still wouldnt go near her, but by the time we left the clinic, he had gotten close enough to pet her a little and decide he was okay with her coming home with us. All the way home we deliberated what the best name would be. Wouldnt you know it, the girls could not agree. Zack wanted Puddin or Bloom, Katelin wanted Sadie, or Daisy, Alissa was pretty agreeable. Madi was difficult. She didnt like anything. For a while we had decided on Baylee, but then threw it out because Brylee was getting upset that that was her name! Finally out of desperation and lack of any other ideas, Ryan throws out Jovi, thinking of his favorite Christmas movie "Elf". He didnt really like it, but just wanted something...anything that would get them to agree. And what do ya know...they liked it. Oh, but since she is a Christmas pup, the full name turned into Jovi Jingles.
So without further adieu...here's Jovi, on her first night home.

She is so full of energy, and extremely playful. I was worried I would be up all night listening to her bark, but surprisingly, she sleeps well. Her favorite toy is a stick, and she loves chasing the leaves that blow by. This was the next day when it turned light out. You would never know it was the end of December out. Check out that green grass.
She is pretty good...for a puppy. She sits, but wont stay, or come. She loves fetch and running. Thats the only thing I have seen excite Ryan. He is looking forward to taking her running with him.
Now for the less enticing things. She is crazy! And fast. Especially in the morning. She is not house trained so I have had my share of messes to clean up...the worst? Did you know dogs like to eat poop? Rabbit poop, their own poop...cat poop. Yeah, well she loves it. At one point I used to think cleaning up vomit was the worst. Then I experienced uncontrollable leaky diarrhea. Well, Ive found something that tops it all. What do you get when you combine the two? Poopy Vomit. Thats right..all over the carpet. So the kids have had to learn a few lessons.
Lesson #1: Keep her away from the bunny poop outside, and clean up the dog poop ASAP, from now on. That spot on the carpet...now whiter than anywhere else. I couldnt clean it enough.
Lesson #2: Keep everything picked up off the floor. Puppies are like babies who have just learned to crawl. She puts everything in her mouth. Even though we have a floor full of doggy toys to keep her busy, she has still taken off with slippers, rulers, stuffed animals, flashlights, socks, shoes, blankets, hot wheels...you name it. If its on the floor...it belongs to the dog. At least the house has been staying cleaner. Oh and along with that...keep the bathroom door closed. Picking up shreds of used kleenex isnt my favorite either. Nowhere close to poopy vomit, but still.
Lesson #3: This one is from Zack- Stay on the couch. The highest part of the couch if possible. The dog will lick you, sniff you and scare you senseless if you let her. Oh, and unless you want to be chased and barked at-dont run!
Lesson # 4: If you lay on the floor, you will become a bed for the dog. Remember, anything on the floor, belongs to her.
Lesson # 5: You must eat up at the counter, or else put the dog in her crate during meal times. Obviously.
Lesson # 6: Keep the gate up, unless the dog is on her leash. The dog wants to play...that cat...does not. If left free to roam, she will chase him throughout the house and it wont end pretty.
Lesson # 7: Watch the dog constantly, or she will dispose onto the curtains. Ive washed them twice now. Thank goodness for the new washer and Dryer.

Following these simple rules will result in more peaceful puppy living. And if we can get through this, and maybe fork out some money for obedience classes, we should all get along just fine. Well, and find a way to get Zack off the top of the couch. Thats a must. Wish us luck!

Christmas, Christmas time is here...

Tell me you got my pun in my title and are now singing...'time for joy, and time for cheer", in the voice of the chipmunks? Alright, maybe thats just me. Anywho, of course the Christmas Eve ritual is always the same, so I will spare a ton of details. You know the drill...Lights, Cookies, Nativity play, presents....
Lets just skip to the pictures, shall we.

This year, we decided to try some new cookies. You've seen their kind. Checkers and swirls. Well, they required a few drops of food color to make them pretty so we snapped on some gloves and kneaded away until the color was mixed in perfectly. Of course, Madi claimed green...

Alissa and Katelin worked in the red, and the chocolate.

Zack and Brylee got a chance to get their hands dirty too. Thats the fun part, right?
While the cookies baked, we engaged in a little dramatic enterp. You know which one, but can you guess who is playing who?
In this scene, you will see Joseph consoling Mary after he finds out she is pregnant.
Brylee insisted on being baby Jesus, even though we told her she was too big. She laid there for about 10 seconds.
Ryan and I switched places this year, and he played King Herod, and Madi and I were the wise women. If you look in the group picture, you will notice, Madi even made a beard for herself using her hair. Silly girl. Oh, and yes, we also doubled as a shepherds.
Up next, like always-the Christmas Eve present opening. Since I made the PJ's earlier to use for our Christmas Cards, they got something else relating to bed time, and a new book.
Brylee got a new Tangled blanket and Elephant and Piggie Books. Like I mentioned before, Mo Willems is my favorite Childrens book author, and these books top the list.
Zack received Perry the Platypus slippers, and some different Elephant Piggie books.
Alissa got a robe...and Elephant Piggie books. There are quite a few...I think we have the complete set now. (:
Katelin also got a robe, and a different Mo Willems book-Knuffle Bunny Free. So cute, it makes me cry. The book I mean, but Katelin is cute too.
And Madi also got a robe, and shockingly, not a Mo Willems book. This one is by Glenn Beck. Good Christmas Story.
I still got PJ pants, just because I needed them.
And Ryan cant sleep in "confining clothing", so he got a pair of athletic shorts. Dont ask me why he is wearing them on his face. He must miss the warmth of his November beard. (:
And, in case you didnt see our Christmas PJ's picture because well....you didnt get a Christmas card...here are a few of those too, including a few extras as well.

The Silly Pose
The Faces pose
The kids that look like they love each other pose
The family pose
And the train pose

Finally the 4 hour cookies were done, and ready for Santa. Think he can eat all those?
Some sleeping did occur, although not much...and then it was that magical time at 5 AM to go downstairs to see if you made the naughty or nice list.
Zacks first visual...a new sled! Too bad we havent had any snow this year. He'll have to use his imagination for now.
Oreo enjoyed the sled rope.
As tradition states, the order of present opening goes from youngest to oldest. Normally the kids exchange names for who to buy for. This year however, on top of the names, I had a couple kids who went the extra mile and bought gifts for everyone with their own money. Youll see who when you get to their list of goods. (;
First up, as youngest Taylor participant: Brylee. She got her own barbie Stuff from Santa (since her sisters dont like to share theirs).
Okay, pictures must be out of order.
Santa brought Katelin a camera...
Madi, a kindle...
Zack, a "big truck" remote control hummer...
and Alissa got tangled barbie stuff.
I will spare you all the pictures, but I had to get some huggy ones.
Madi and Katelin got a Pictionary DS game to share.
Alissa got Katelin an I-Carly DS game. She likes it, if you couldnt tell.
And then we hit the point in the morning where disappointment struck. Short back story: Brylee loves Dora. All season long, she was talking about getting a Dora doll. Santa wasnt getting credit for this one! But what was her reaction when she opened the gift?...
Yeah. Isnt that the saddest face you've ever seen? What up with that!? Needless to say, she decided to take a break from gifts for a while. She'll return later.

Zack, however loved every one of his gifts. I think Brylee liked his better too.
Here is something else he really wished for, a ball you can bounce on.
Cant leave out Oreo. He got kitty treats, and some gourmet canned cat food (since normally he gets the cheap dry stuff).
Now this is the response we all hope for after deliberating, fighting crowds, and going broke...
Madi got the complete Harry Potter Movie set. Well, minus the last one. Mom and Dad took credit for that one too. Although, she knows we really get credit for all of them.
And then came time for the present of all presents. They all got to open this one at the same time, because it was basically the same thing. Zack was confused by how he should use the dog bones. Yuck.
Yes, thats right...surprise! We are getting a dog. Zack still trying to figure it out by reading the fine print. "What the heck did you get me dog bones for!?"

After seeing all that happiness, Brylee decided to return and try her luck again. She opened the present from Katelin this time. We're in luck! She likes it. Okay, maybe Christmas isnt so bad after all.
After Church, Brylee and Zack put their toys to good use. Zack climbed inside his truck box and Brylee held him hostage with his laser gun. "Dont shoot! Im innocent!"
Now for the final loot pictures.

Ryan and I didnt pose for pictures this year, but Santa brought us a new Blue Ray Player, and a Dell Tablet, which has finally introduced us to the craze of Angry Birds. Ryan actually seems quite addicted to it, which is not a normal thing. Madi got Ryan some juggling balls and a squeezy stress person thing. I got him a new shaver. Madi got me a locket necklace, and Ryan got me a BYU hoodie, and also an early gift of a new Washer and Dryer. I dont think our clothes were actually getting clean until now. So nice.

So that wraps it up. Another Christmas in the bag!
Hope yours was great too!
